The Power of Change : Book Review

The Power of Change

The Power of Change 1

By Jim Hartness and Neil Eskelin

“The decision to change takes only a moment, but its impact may last a lifetime

The greatest hurdle to change is the first step – the actual decision to do it. After that, anything is possible. The decision takes only a moment, but its impact will last a lifetime.

Review: The Power of Change © 2014

is a self-help book that focuses on an individual’s decision to CHANGE for the better of his/her life. This book can help you through giving detailed techniques and advices based from real studies from psychologists and even in the bible about transforming yourself into a best version of yourself. .

I think it’s my very first owned self-help book. Haha! I’ve bought it on Manila International Book Fair in SMX last September 2015. Please do read my blog about my experience there. The LIGHT HOUSE publication is my most liked booth there where I bought the power of change. They have lots of inspiring book  for a lower price.

The Authors Writing Style

The authors of this book are Jim Hartness and Neil Eskelin. They are influenced by the concept of psychology . They usually site real studies related to the topic. The words used are concise. It’s educational too, context- wise.

Power of Change 2.JPG

I want to share some inspiring topics that I really like upon reading this book:

Ten steps to a transformed self esteem

  1. Get acquainted with the real you
  2. Laugh at your handicaps
  3. Put your failures in perspective
  4. Develop a healthy love – of yourself
  5. Find someone who needs your help
  6. Deliberately change you behaviour
  7. Choose a creative challenge
  8. Get comfortable with compliments
  9. Revalue your worth
  10. See a brand new picture

“Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there’s anything praise worthy, meditate of those things. (Phil 4:8)

Target one – My goal is specific

Target two – My goal is measurable

Target three – My goal is challenging, yet achievable

Target four – It is my goal, not someone else’s

Target five – All of my goals reinforce each other

Target six – My goals includes a plan to achieve it

Target seven – I write down my goal  (this one is effective to me! It happens!)

The seven targets for goal setting are meaningless unless you put them into action. For each one, try reading the objective aloud and see how it applies to your written goal. Most important, do something specific every day that brings you closer to your objective. By looking at the “bull’s – eye”, rather than the distractions, you’re halfway home. A winner is not problem-oriented, but solution oriented.

Time Management Principles

  • Live in the present
  • Place a value on your activity
  • Create a written daily schedule
  • Prioritize your tasks
  • Make effective use of short period of time
  • Don’t allow others to determine your schedule
  • Work Smart
  • Recognize time waster
  • Focus on personal productivity
  • Do it now

Ten Keys to Personal excellence

  1. Don’t settle for average
  2. Pay Attention to Detail
  3. Develop a Deep Commitment
  4. Be known for Ethics and Integrity
  5. Show Genuine Respect for Others
  6. Go the Second Mile
  7. Be Consistent
  8. Never Stop Improving
  9. Make excellence a Lifestyle
  10. Always Give 110 Percent

HOUR 23: The Power of Persistence

~ Keeping your eye on the Goal

Will you make mistakes along the way? Count on it. Someone once said, “To err is human. It is only when the eraser wears out before the pencil you know you’re overdoing it. “When you know what you need to do, take immediate action and don’t stop until you reach your goal. If you stub your toe, it’s an indication that you weren’t sitting down.

I never regret that I bought this book for a personal purpose. Right now, I have three worlds. I have the MONTESSORI School, CTP CLASS (every Saturdays) and my BLOGGING Life. It’s like my life revolves with this three so the TIME MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES written in this book is really a useful guide for me. Also, I’ve learned that goal setting is actually a skill and its better if it is taught in our schools.

I can read this book everywhere or anytime that I want. I can recommend it to all of you whatever your profession is. Thumbs up! It’s deserves a high score from me!

Teaching ESL + Korean Friends

By: Lovely del Mundo

English as a Second Language (ESL or TESL) is a traditional term for the use or study of the English language by non-native speakers in an English-speaking environment. English as a Second Language also refers to specialized approaches to language teaching designed for those whose primary language is not English. (source:  grammar.about.com)

How do I find ESL teaching?

Teaching in an English Academy is more convenient than teaching for a traditional school because it’s one on one basis and there’s less expectations to meet. In this academy, the books level are to be followed. Everything you need is already on the books required  per level. You just need to make them answer the worksheets and explain the lesson per chapter in book. Of course, don’t forget to give your student LOTS OF HOMEWORK. That’s Korean approach to education in my experience . The more homework the better. That’s why most Korean students are burn out of studying. About ESL  as a particular program, I think its organize and interesting to teach. There are subjects under ESL which are Reading, Writing, Grammar, Listening and Conversation.  I am a Grammar and Writing teacher then. I enjoyed it because I am the one who decides about the style how will I teach a certain topic. The exciting part is giving an essay topic to your students especially middle school to high school because most of the time their ideas are funny and eccentric. I prefer that kind of set-up in my teaching career. I miss checking papers! >.<

Let me share you a story happened 4 years ago (2011). I worked in Alabang, Muntinlupa for 8 months teaching ESL for South Koreans. I am more interested in dealing with foreign students as I would like to take the chance to learn new culture and language which is one of my interests in life.  Those were the days that I was so obsessed with South Korean culture. I know their TV Dramas, Music, Movies, Brand Ads, Tradition, Actors and anything related with their Pop Culture as I was so crazy that time with CNBLUE (A South Korean Pop-Rock Band). The day I was hired in this job was winter camp season. Winter Camp means group of Korean students will fly here in the Philippines to spend their winter vacation still studying in English Academies.  This is also the time that the schedules of tutorials are so full because this is the hike of the number of students.  I was hired because of my reason that I love Korean culture. That time, I don’t have any teaching experience yet.

Eventually, I became friends with Korean people. (even dated Korean men..:o)  I still have contact with two of my students in Facebook.  Our chats were very seldom now though.

If there are bad things that happened, I must think that there are happy things that happened as well right. (Somehow) I don’t need to dwell only with the negative ones because there are more interesting moments and friendship that I won’t forget in the bright side of my story in that place.

I even received this kind of gift. It so thoughtful of Matthew Lee’s mom that time.  Do you know that this is a COLLECTOR’S ITEM!!!! How did she know that I love guitar?  If one there’s one thing that I regret, I didn’t say to Ms. Jeon that I am going to resign. Maybe, She’s shocked too by that time. I hope she can understand me.  She’s a really thoughtful mom.🙂

Then… Here’s Jinhye unnie~ She’s the closest korean friend I had. We just clicked together because we have almost the same interest to talk about.🙂 She’s also the first foreigner I got to hang out with.

I’ve learned so much about Korean culture by that time. I also learned to read and write in Hangul. (elementary proficiency) That’s a nice experience. I actually want to pursue my ESL teaching  as a profession in a university setting. I’ll do my best then!  がんばろう!

If you want to learn more about ESL, I’ll recommend to you my blogger friend, Katie’s  ENGLISH EXPRESSIONS.

Charlotte (2015) : Anime Review

Charlotte key.jpg

Charlotte follows the story of four students in an alternate reality from Hoshinoumi Academy, a school founded to protect children with special abilities that develop during puberty, as they search for and protect others like them throughout Japan. (Source: http://charlotte-anime.wikia.com/)

CHARLOTTE  is a unique, surreal, drama and science fiction anime. It was ranked # 1 2015 Anime on Japan based from my blogger friend Shiroyuni.  (Please do read the “Charlotte: The Controversy” article too.) Why Charlotte is the title?  Charlotte is an asteroid crossing on earth every 75 years (not sure).  Inhaling the dust from the asteroid will give people super natural ability (known as ability wielders).

The genre of the songs is something like electronica (owl city like sound) which is cool and appropriate for its animation.

Here the list of songs:

The story focuses on  students including Yū Otosaka, a boy with the power to control another person, albeit only for 5 seconds and only when directly looking at the target, Nao Tomori, who uses her power to become invisible to one person she chooses in order to convince others to listen to her, Jōjirō Takajō, with the power to move extremely quickly making it look like teleportation, and Yusa Nishimori who is usually possessed by her deceased pyrokinetic sister, Misa, due to her ability as a medium.

Together they will catch the ability wielders abusing their powers and convince them to be protected.

Yū Otosaka (乙坂 有宇, Otosaka Yū)

is the male protagonist of the story, and a first-year transfer student at Hoshinoumi Academy. He has the ability to temporarily possess a person for about 5 seconds. However, it is later revealed that his actual ability is stealing the abilities of an ability-user he possesses. Towards the end of the series, he becomes widely known (and feared) as the One-Eyed Grim Reaper. He is Ayumi Otosaka’s older brother and Shunsuke Otosaka’s younger brother.

Nao Tomori (友利 奈緒, Tomori Nao)

is one of the main characters of Charlotte. She is a first year and the Student Council president of Hoshinoumi Academy. Nao often uses her camcorder to record the power of ability users for proof, and is a huge fan of ZHIEND, her brother’s favorite band.

Jōjirō Takajō (高城 丈士朗 Takajō Jōjirō)

is a member of the Hoshinoumi Academy student council. He is also an ability wielder. He is able to move at extremely high speeds. This movement is so rapid, things around him slow down and makes him look like he is teleporting; however, it is not to be confused with actual teleportation.

Yusa Nishimori (西森柚咲, Nishimori Yusa)

is a main character and also a member of the student council. She is the vocalist of the band How-Low-Hello and a teen idol of sorts. She is also known as Yusarin. Her real surname is “Kurobane” (黒羽 柚咲, Kurobane Yusa) but her agency changed it since they thought that the name was not appropriate for an idol. This means she was born as Yusa Kurobane.

Ayumi Otosaka (乙坂 歩未, Otosaka Ayumi)

is a main character in Charlotte and Yū Otosaka‘s little sister. She is in middle school and idolizes Yusa Nishimori from the band How-Low-Hello.Throughout the series, Ayumi displayed a very cheerful personality. She gets along easily with other people, as seen when she first met Nao Tomori and Yū in her new apartment. She cares a lot for her brother, making sure to wake him up early to prepare breakfast for him every day.

P.A. Works and Aniplex are responsible for the animation.  And, it was great! The animation of this anime is attractive for me. It’s modern and digital integrated.  The different emotions of Yu was well shown in his facial expressions.

Comments and Suggestions:

On my shortest summer break, Charlotte anime series made me transcend to the galaxy of supernatural and life beyond experience. Thanks to Jana’s younger brother because he has the complete 13 episodes copy. It made me watch it continuously. (No Buffer!)

I thought it will be just another school life drama but I was wrong. It was really UNPREDICTABLE. It had adrenaline rush watching the middle part of the series up to the end. Though, I fast forward some scenes in Yuu’s depression drama and around the world mission.

Watching this is like playing a mind game but you suddenly lose because you get lost on finding out what’s next. I even get confused in some point of the story. (Yu’s dream after collapsing in ZHEIND’s Concert) I like the student council club relationship (reminds me of Hyouka) developed thoroughly as episodes goes by. This support group (Yusarin, Takajo and Nao) helped Otosaka Yu to get motivated and recovered faster in the hospital.

Yusarin’s pop idol sensation, Zheind’s vocalist big apetite, Takajo’s ability to order fastly and Ayumi’s repetitive omelette rice give light to the story. (Just a few humor to chew on in this series). Regarding the different abilities, I’ve seen Yu’s the most powerful and threatening. It’s the ability to loot others power.

He becomes the key solution in the end to save the world.  I was terrified upon discovering it because it reminds me about my “personal tragic past experience”.  I already saw it on my nightmares. Let say, I had some same experience to Yu’s.  On the other hand, knowing that this power is only temporary (puberty disease) puts my hopes high.

At First, I hate Yu and don’t like him to end up with Nao. Tomori Nao is my most liked character because she just rocks :p. haha!  I’ve come to like Yu when he confessed to Nao. *oops spoiler* I love how Nao responded to him in the most matured and logical way. They waited to prioritize saving the world.  Wow! It’s not an overly dramatic romance. Good Job! Maeda san!

The anime taught me the value of life, reality of miracles and responsibility for power. It was my first Maeda work experience. It was nice! I recommend it to people who has higher wisdom and astronomy nerd (? Haha). So, what’s your thought about this anime? Let me know by leaving comments below.

PS: My country Philippines was also mentioned in this anime last episode.
